Bioscience and Health Care

Accelerate Colorado advocates for federal support of projects and policies that will lead to the growth and development of the bioscience and health care industries in Colorado.

A strong federal investment in medical research is critical for the health and prosperity of Colorado's bioscience and health care industries.  Increased support for medical research from the Administration and Congress will impact the bioscience and health care industries by providing more dollars for research in technologies that may one day not only provide cures for disease, but also help create profitable products and companies that employ highly skilled workers in Colorado.

Accelerate Colorado's 2011 Bioscience and Health Care Asks

  • Accelerate Colorado supports the America Invents Act - a bill addressing the need for patent reform - passed in March 2011 by the Senate and we support the movement of a bill resembling the Senate’s version through the House.
    • House Judiciary Chairman Lamar Smith (R-TX) recently introduced patent reform legislation to the House.  This measure would accomplish many of the same things as the Senate’s America Invents Act, such as movement to a first-to-file patent award system.
  • Accelerate Colorado strongly supports making Colorado the home of one of the new satellite United States Patent and Trademark Offices (USPTO).
    • Because of Colorado’s leadership in technology and innovation, our desirable living location and our proximity to other major technology hubs in the West, we are well positioned to receive one of the new offices.  Detroit has already been selected as the first of three or more new locations for satellite USPTO offices.
  • Accelerate Colorado supports President Obama’s proposal for increasing funding for the National Institutes of Health (NIH) by 2.4% to just under $40 billion.  For every $1 million invested in NIH, approximately 30 jobs are created or sustained.
    • Given the uncertainty of the current budget situation in Washington, D.C. the fate of NIH funding is at this time unclear.
